Experience a taste of authentic Botswana at Khama Rhino Sanctuary located within 4,200 hectares of sandveld, calcrete basins, and a number of scattered smaller pans. Discover endless horizons, unforgettable wilderness, splendid waterways, sand dunes and an abundance of wildlife in beautiful Botswana. Situated between Central Kalahari and Maun, close to the town of Serowe, Khama Rhino Sanctuary is a true eco-tourism destination, a non-profitable community operated sanctuary dedicated to protecting endangered species, particularly rhinos.
The Botswana Rhino Sanctuary was setup in an area that was optimal and excellent for the habitation and preservation of Rhino’s. It is close to the Botswana Defense Force, allowing for 24 hour protection from poachers. This project has provided many jobs for the local community and has taught the ‘locals’ more about these animals.
So far, this project has been a great success in helping the White Rhinos and the Black Rhinos’ survival rate – visiting this area on a Botswana Safari can help this cause. Many other animals share the Rhino Sanctuary reserve with these animals, such as: Red Hartebeest, Wild Cat, Lynx, Brown Hyaena, Leopard, Jackal, Antelope, and Zebra… But the main focus of this reserve is to ensure the conservation of the Rhino’s.
The Botswana Khama Rhino Sanctuary project has grown successfully and initially began with the transfer and relocation of 14 White Rhinos and 2 Black Rhinos. Some of these animals arrived injured by poachers and hunters. Over the past years, more Rhino’s have been relocated (mainly from areas in Botswana) to this sanctuary making the total around 34 (a few of them been bred and born there) – they all get to roam around freely in a secure and preserved area! The Khama Rhino Sanctuary relies on donations to fund and keep the project and going. Visit this sanctuary on a Botswana Safari to support them.
