Kwa-Zulu Natal - South Africa

SNORKELLING

Rocktail Bay offers both boat- and shore-based snorkelling, which affords amazing opportunities to view marine life, swim with dolphins, whale sharks and perhaps catch sight of the gentle giants of the ocean: Humpback and Southern Right Whales!

Lodge guests can also have a guided trip down to Lala Nek which boasts an emerged sedimentary rocky reef, with safe shore and boat entry points. This wonderful underwater spot is brimming with diverse marine life and over 200 species of fish have been recorded there.

FISHING

Since Rocktail Bay is located in the Maputaland Marine Reserve, fishing here is purely catch-and-release. Fly fishing the surf zone along the Maputaland coast is probably one of the most rewarding experiences available to saltwater fly fishermen in South Africa.

There are two areas in which to experience fly fishing: the surf zone and the estuarine zone. Both provide a variety of different species. The surf zone yields mainly kingfish (Carangidae spp.), aggressive surface predators that are a challenge to fish for! Kingfish are caught throughout the year, while summer months starting in October through to mid-May are prime months In addition to kingfish, there are a wide range of fish species to catch at Rocktail Bay, such as wave garrick, springer, wolf herring, bastard mullet (threadfin) and numerous other tropical species.

Of prime importance whilst trying to catch kingfish is the Oceanographic Research Institute / Sedgewicks Tag and Release Programme. Using this programme, more than 80 kingfish of different species have been tagged and released along the Maputaland coast. In addition, the conservation ethic of tagging and releasing fish provides a wonderful feeling of being actively involved in a conservation programme as well as the undeniable fact that guests have their fish swimming free to be possibly caught again.

FOREST WALKS

The coastal forest has a choice of pathways that wind through from the Lodge to the beach. Such walks allow guests to explore one of the largest forested dunes in the world, as well as possibly catch a glimpse of the diverse fauna and flora along the way, such as red and grey duiker and many bird species.

There are three main walks in and around the lodge, two of which wind through the forest and eventually lead you to the beach. On the way there is much to marvel at, such as the Coastal Milkwood, standing tall along the foot paths and keep a look-out for the beautiful Gold-Banded Forester, a butterfly endemic to this biome.

Rocktail offers another walk, aptly named the Ulwandla Trail, as it holds one of the most spectacular ocean views on the coastline. This two-and-a-half hour trail will take you into the forest depths, out onto the grasslands and finally on the beach, allowing you to truly see the diversity of the region.

The Hammock Trail Walk has various stopping points along the way where one can take a break by relaxing in a private hammock!

GUIDED WALKS AND DRIVES

Professional guides can enhance both walks and drives in the area. Drives include an excursion to Black Rock, an enormous fossilised dune that juts out into the sea, as well as a trip to the Hippo Pools, where a large pod of hippo hang out in this freshwater lake. Birding drives to Vasi Pan are also highly recommended with grassland specials to see such as Lesser Jacana, Lesser Moorhen and Pink-throated Longclaw.

When walking the Ulwandla Trail, a guide can point out the inhabitants of the various types of vegetation, from coastal forest to grassland to beach. Every tree can be named if you want to know it!

BIRDING

Rocktail Bay boasts phenomenal birdlife, in the forests, on the beach and out in the grasslands. Our enthusiastic guides are more than willing to venture out to find some of the 'specials' found in the region. These specials include Livingstone's Turaco, Green Malkoha, Green Twinspot, Grey Waxbill and Buffspotted Flufftail in the forest, to name but a few, with over 56 species found at the Lodge birdhide alone.

Out in the grasslands, one can expect to see Yellow, Orange and Rosy-Throated Longclaws, Senegal Lapwings, Sooty Falcons, Honey Buzzard, Long-crested Eagle and many more. On the beach the occasional Palm-nut Vulture is seen with sightings of Common Whimbrel, Indian Yellow-Nosed Albatross, Subantarctic Skua, Common Tern, Caspian Tern and African Fish Eagles preying on fish in the Bay. In the winter months one may be fortunate enough to witness the Cape Gannets following the whales up north and plunging down into shoals of fish beneath

HORSE RIDING

The horse riding offered at Rocktail serves as a wonderful way of viewing the area. Riding is outsourced to local Horse Safari Company, situated in the heart of Maputaland.

There are two rides on offer. The first is a beach ride, at low tide which gives riders the opportunity to experience all the sights and smells of the Indian Ocean whilst parading the soft silica sands.
The second ride offered is at high tide and gives the rider the chance to travel the grasslands of the area, as well as the pans inshore. These pans are home to a number of hippo and crocodile and a ride alongside them is always a memorable occasion.

KIDS FUN

Rocktail Bay Lodge is perfectly suited for families, as it boasts a variety of activities for children, from childminding facilities to swims, walks and excursions specifically tailored to keep young minds occupied and interested.

Our enormous beach is the biggest sandpit in the world! is the perfect spot for children to dig in with buckets, spades and lots of imagination. Parents are able to relax on cushions under palm shelters while keeping an eye on their children.

The wonders of the sea, the intertidal zones and the forest are all at hand to be explored. From fish and crabs to hippos and turtles, there's a lot to see.

An “intertidal walk” with a guide opens up a new world to children, as they wander along looking in rock pools and discovering the small fish, crabs and starfish that live in them. Shell collecting and a little light fishing are always a hit, while the shallow water near Lala Nek makes it a perfect snorkelling spot for children, with tropical fish, anemones, octopus, eels and rays abounding. Stargazing on the beach on clear nights is always fun – and you can see the phosphorescence glowing on the waves. A walk along the beach reveals a host of different animals that inhabit the water’s edge: ghost and mole crabs and the tiny ploughshare snails.

Other activities
For families, volleyball or catchball can be set up on the beach, and sand tennis or cricket can be played at Spring Low Tide. On windy days, kite flying is a must, and one can go boogie boarding in the surf.

In camp, there are movies, board games, marine-themed colouring-in books and puzzles. Outdoors, there are thrilling treasure hunts and toasting marshmallows around the fire at night. Young ladies can get their hair braided by one of the female staff members at extra charge.

Trips to Black Rock (children under 13 to be accompanied by an adult) to find red rock crabs and look down blow-holes and a drive to Hippo Pools are both fun excursions a little further away from camp. On both these drives, depending on the season, the guide will allow children to taste different fruits of the forest.

During the summer, children can accompany their parents to view the rare Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles as they make their way up the beach to lay their eggs. This is sometimes very late at night, but it’s worth having an afternoon nap to prepare for – it’s rightly considered the sight of a lifetime by all who are privileged to see it.

Please note: babysitting is at extra cost and one day’s notice must be given. Families with children may have different dining times if the camp is full. But there’s a great children’s menu with pizza, hamburgers and pasta, just right for a kid’s appetite!

All in all, Rocktail Bay Lodge combines the best of a classic family holiday at the beach with a fun-filled edutainment aspect – having fun while learning about our seas and beaches and the life that fills them.

QUAD BIKING

With the development of the Gugulesizwe Cultural Village, a new activity has become available to guests at Rocktail Bay. Together with members of the local community as your guide, groups of up to 10 can take a scenic ride through the area on a quad bike.

Stopping off for refreshments along the way, breathtaking views of the Maputoland coastal forests and dunes can be shared.

The track the rides follow can test the experienced quad bikers, or gentler tracks will lead the less experienced riders on an equally exhilirating journey through the Rocktail Bay area.

DIVING

From a scuba diving perspective, Rocktail Bay is unique. Not only is the diving conducted within a Reserve and World Heritage Site along unspoiled reefs, but divers have the luxury of knowing that they alone have access to these sites and are the only underwater visitors along this stretch of the coastline. Marine life is prolific and together with the coral landscape allows Rocktail Bay to offer diving that is amongst the finest in the world.

The Lodge boasts a fully accredited dive centre and diving operation that is unrivalled in South Africa for its access to remote, exclusive reefs. Diving is excellent all year round, with the different seasons bringing a variety of wonders to the water. One of the highlights in the summer months is diving with docile, pregnant Ragged-tooth Sharks when they migrate up north to our area and rest in the caves in the reefs. For the diver wanting a more exclusive diving experience, with small numbers of divers on the reef and the dive boat, Rocktail Bay is the ideal destination.

DIVING SEASONS

Diving takes place all year round, the only difference being water temperature and visibility. In the winter months - June to September - the water temperature ranges between 20 - 22 degrees Celsius with visibility between 10m - 15m. Visibility of 20m+ has been recorded in wintertime, although not on a regular basis.

August to October is quite a windy period with winds coming from the north-east and south-west. Although diving is still good during this period, it can be a little uncomfortable; launching does continue unless top conditions become unsafe. In the spring/summer months - late September to May - the water temperature gradually begins to rise and can reach as high as 28 degrees Celsius by late January/early February, with the average water visibility between 12m - 35m+. Summer is the rainy season but diving does continue as the water temperature and visibility makes up for the adverse top conditions. Finally, Rocktail Bay was named the Best Dive Site worldwide in the Harpers and Queen Travel Awards 2003 travel supplement!

Abseiling, Gorge Swing & Flying Fox

This is definitely not for the faint-hearted! Your morning commences with the Highwire (a zipline) across the width of the Batoka Gorge. You then learn the basics of abseiling/rap jumping down a 100m cliff face . and then after lunch, the GORGE SWING (there is only a few other places in the world where you can do this!). This is one of the best value for money activities in the entire area as all activities can be done as many times as you wish in the day.

These relatively new activities are operated on a spectacular site above Rapid 7. A safety instructor briefs guests on the area and proper use of the equipment before starting. The abseil is 53 metres moving down the gorge wall backwards or clients can "rap jump" facing towards.

The gorge swing entails throwing yourself off the edge of the cliff attached to a body harness and free falling for 50 metres before being swung out into the middle of the gorge. The jump ends with several pendulum swings before clients are lowered to the ground. At the bottom there is a track back to the top of the gorge.

The flying fox is a cable slide high above the gorge and clients "fly" across, attached to a special body harness. They are then pulled back to the gorge so there is no walkout. All activities can be done as many times as you like throughout the day.

River / Boogie Boarding

For those of you wanting to catch the perfect wave that never breaks, this is the best! Begin your day by grabbing a board, slapping on some fins and learning some tricks with your qualified guide before heading down into some HUGE walls of water. This can be combined with a rafting trip. No experience necessary but if you're a surfer, this is a must!

The sport involves "surfing" the rapids on body boards accompanied by a qualified River Guide.  Basic riverboarding skills are taught in still water before progressing into moving water.  Enthusiastic boarders can stop at "play spots" along the way to surf, ride whirlies and "squirt" (best described as flying underwater).

All you need is to be reasonably fit and be prepared to "Go for it!"

A cameraman accompanies the trip taking video footage and photographs which are shown at the end of the day at the Zambezi Waterfront.

Bungi Jumping

The Victoria Falls Bungi Bridge is 111 Mtrs of pure African adrenaline and still one of the highest bungi bridges in world! The bridge itself forms the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia and has it's own little piece of history for being a major part of Rhodes' Cape to Cairo railway. After screaming, crying and thanking God that the elastic is still tied to your ankles, you'll bounce around to the sites of Victoria Falls and the Batoka Gorge.

The bungi jump operates off the Victoria Falls Bridge and has a 100% safety record. Over 50 000 people have committed themselves to the thrill of jumping off the bridge.

Challenge the limits of the mind and test the edge of fear by leaping off the impressive bridge, with the Falls behind and the mighty Zambezi below.

Ankle and body harnesses are attached separately to clients. After jumping they are winched back onto the bridge. Photographs and video are taken of each jumper and are available for purchase.

Canoeing

The canoe trails operate above Victoria Falls and are the perfect activity for those who want to experience the tranquility of the Zambezi River as they paddle downstream with the current in inflatable two-man canoes.

The trails begin approximately 25km upstream from the the Victoria Falls and during the day about 18km is spent canoeing with a stop at an island for lunch.

At the end of the day, the trip reaches the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park boundary where clients are met by vehicles for a drive through the National park.

In the park, clients have a good opportunity for spotting the endangered white rhino.

Day Trip to Chobe National Park - Botswana

Chobe makes for a great day trip from Livingstone, being only an hour drive away. This park is teeming with elephant and lion sightings a plenty! Definitely one of the best parks in Southern Africa. Day trips include a morning game drive and afternoon cruise along the Chobe River.

Clients are collected in the morning and transported to the border post, then across the mighty Zambezi heading to where the borders of Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana meet in the middle of the river.  The meeting of four countries is one of only two places on the globe where this is possible.

At Kasane, Botswana, clients commence a river cruise down the Chobe River.  This riverfront area is renowned for its large herds of elephant, buffalo, variety of antelope, hippo, crocodile and a myriad of birds.

The afternoon includes a scenic wilderness game drive in Chobe National Park with a return to Livingstone by Sunset.

Elephant Back Safaris

An elephant back safari is not just a ride on the largest animal in Africa, it's an unforgettable experience where clients get to interact with the elephants as well as enjoy a ride through wilderness areas and beautiful riverine scenery.

Whilst on the ride, clients may see other wild elephant as well as buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and a host of other plains game.  Along the Zambezi River, hippo and crocodile are common and there is a wide variety of bird species.

Each elephant has its own handler and clients will leave having witnessed the elephant's incredible skills, intelligence and willingness to respond to instruction.  The ride is approximately one hour and the overall interaction time with the elephants is about 3 hours.  Trips are available in the morning and afternoon.

Fishing on the Zambezi

Spend a day on the magnificent Upper Zambezi River - pitting your skills against the vivacious Tiger Fish and delicious bream as well as various other fish that the Zambezi has to offer. At the same time you will enjoy the amazing bird and wildlife of the region. Price includes transfers, boat, rods, fishing tackle, lures, bait and meals and drinks.

Helicopter Flights

Chopper flights over the majestic Victoria Falls and Batoka Gorge while zig zagging above some of the best scenery in Africa. For those of you that want a bit more machinery around you than a microlight, this is the next best thing (and you can bring your own camera). 15 or 30 minute flights.

The helicopter seating is designed so that all passengers have a good view on the Falls and the scenery below.

Flights operate all day and have a capacity for five passengers.  Charter flights are also available.

An option is to include a helicopter flip with a white water rafting trip through the Batoka Gorge - it saves the walk from the bottom of the gorge at the end of the day!

Jet Boating

Jet boating is a thrilling new adventure on the Zambezi River in the Batoka Gorge below the Victoria Falls. Feel the wind in your hair and the spray in your face as the powerful jet boats speed through rapids, rush past gorge walls and spin on the flat water.

The 30 minute jet boat trip can be combined with a spectacular helicopter flight (from a heli pad by the river) through the gorge flying just above the water level and then over the Victoria Falls. This dramatic heli flight is available either in to / out of the gorge.

Tandem Kayaking

Maximum weight 95kg. If you aren't yet comfortable to challenge the Zambezi on your own, then this is the next best thing! Start your day by learning to paddle and roll while your personal guide is always right behind. You'll brave the river along with the daily rafting trip so all meals, drinks etc. - are included.

Kayaking

Beginner, intermediate, advanced and freestyle kayaking courses available as well as full day and multi day trips. All of this on one of the world's best kayak rivers - come and see why so many of the best international kayakers like to consider the Zambezi to be home! Big rapids, flat pools, warm water, sunshine - what could be better?

Another dimension to the white water experience on the Zambezi is where clients are taken down the rapids in Topolino Duo Kayaks.

Paddles, life jackets and helmets are issued at check-in.  A comprehensive safety talk and practice session is done at the bottom of the gorge before commencing the day's activity.

An experienced white water kayaker who steers the boat through the rapids acts as River Guide.  The kayaking trip is run in conjunction with the daily rafting trip for added safety.  Should the kayak capsize in a rapid, the guide attempts an Eskimo roll, failing which the client and guide end up swimming the rest of the rapid!

Microlight Flights

The microlight has an open cockpit for the ultimate adrenaline ride!

Microlights have a unique wing-mounted camera which enables clients to capture this exciting experience on film.  There are restrictions that apply on the microlight - a minimum age of six years and maximum mass of 100kg.

Flight duration ranges from 15 minutes which offers stunning views of Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River; to a 30 minute flight which goes down stream over the Batoka Gorge or upstream over the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park providing an excellent game spotting opportunity.
